Broom's Bloom gets its name frlm the colonial land grant for area in which it is located. The farm and house date back to the early 1700's, and is supported by the 9th generation of the Dallam family. They sell what they grown and raise on the farm, and also offer other local Harford County agricultrual products and specialty items. If you're looking for farm to table cuisine, then it can't get any closer than Broom's Bloom. Soup offerings vary on a daily basis, and the CSR was lucky enough to stop in on a day where they had both Maryland and Cream of Crab. Let's see if 'farm fresh' makes a difference in crab soups!

Cream of Crab Soup

Broom's Bloom Dairy's Cream of Crab soup is a chicken-based cream soup with a hint of sherry and tons of crab in every bite!

With the chicken base, the soup comes off as a bit yellow, although the pictures above tend to make it more yellow than it actually is in person. Crab meat is plentiful and in good sized pieces, and tastes super sweet. The spicing in the broth is perfect, tastes like Old Bay with a bit of pepper. Consistency is thick, but not too thick.

The cream of crab soup is out of this world! Really, what more could you expect coming from a dairy? The flavor of the broth frames the crab meat flavor really well. The day we were there, almost every table had this soup on them, with a good number of people opting for the larger bowl size. Now we know why, and if you happen to bump into us there on a weekend afternoon, we'll be amongst the group of happy people who came for nothing more than this soup, and perhaps some ice cream if it's hot out.

Maryland Crab Soup

Broom's Bloom Dairy's Maryland Crab Soup has a tomato-base broth with tons of crab. Soup contains chunks of tomato, carrots, peas, corn, green beans, and bacon.

Crab meat is in nice sized hunks, although the crab is cooked in with the soup, so the meat doesn't have much flavor left to it. The broth has a dominate tomato flavor, and not much crab or spice flavor. The veggies taste really fresh, which you don't unfortunately don't see in too many soups nowadays.

With the lack of crab or Old Bay flavor coming through in the broth, the overall soup becomes average. The broth does get better towards the bottom of the bowl, but we had to get to the end of the soup to notice it resembling crab stock with light seasoning flavor. Maybe mixing the soup up a bit more before serving will help. But at least there is some serious potential in the soup.
